How it works
Flicker Meter analyzes rapid brightness changes from your iPhone's camera. High-speed capture at up to 240 fps on capable devices detects flicker up to approximately 120 Hz (Nyquist limit). Hold the phone still and point at the light or an evenly lit surface under it.

Aim the camera at the LED, fluorescent tube, monitor, or an evenly lit wall under the light. The app shows a live preview and frame rate indicator.
Tap Start Analysis and hold the phone steady. The app captures frames and analyzes brightness over time. Hold-still guidance helps you maintain a stable reading.
See peak flicker frequency in Hz, flicker intensity percentage, and a confidence rating. Lock AE and white-balance for more consistent measurements.
What's in the app
Flicker Meter is a tool for understanding light flicker in everyday environments. It is not a laboratory instrument, not a medical device, and not for compliance testing.
Displays the dominant flicker frequency in Hz detected from the camera's brightness time-series. 240 fps capture on capable iPhones enables detection up to approximately 120 Hz (Nyquist limit).
Shows how much the brightness varies as a percentage. Higher intensity means more pronounced flicker. Useful for comparing different light sources.
Each reading includes a confidence level (High, Medium, Low) based on signal clarity, frame rate consistency, and hold-still stability. Low confidence suggests trying again with better lighting or a steadier hold.
Real-time feedback helps you keep the phone steady during capture. Motion reduces measurement accuracy; the app alerts you if movement is detected.
Lock auto-exposure and white-balance to prevent the camera from adjusting mid-capture. Locked settings produce more stable brightness readings and cleaner frequency analysis.
Designed to measure home and office LEDs, fluorescent tubes, dimmable bulbs, and monitors or screens that may use PWM dimming. Not intended for strobes, lasers, or extremely high-frequency industrial lighting.

iPhone cameras vary by model and generation. Frame rates, exposure control, and sensor characteristics differ. Environmental factors — ambient light, distance, angle, surface reflectance, hand steadiness — all influence the reading.
Do not use Flicker Meter for legal compliance, regulatory certification, IEEE or IEC standards verification, workplace safety assessments, medical diagnosis, or professional lighting-quality reports. It does not claim to meet any laboratory or medical device standards.
